Calculate, Fail, & Fix

We all have dreams. Not all of us have goals. Some of us are doing a bit more to accomplish all of our dreams. Those individuals are pressing forward in order to take one step closer to those dreams. Each step represents an accomplished goal. Why is it necessary to follow this philosophy? Because there is no such thing as overnight success. Success (no matter how you define it) is a result of stretching yourself toward your goal in order to get one step closer to your dreams.

And from now on, in order to accomplish whatever dreams you have placed in front of you, it will be necessary to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. This essentially means putting yourself in situations in which you would not normally operate. Why? Because it is becoming harder and harder to just accomplish lofty dreams by doing the same thing over and over. As an example, working for the same company for 30 years is becoming something of an anamoly. So whether you are working for someone now or starting your own venture, it will be important to grasp three important concepts.

Calculate risks. You have to take risks. In fact, taking risks should become more of the norm. These risks, however, do not have to be the Las Vegas-type risks. Instead, these risks should be the calculated type. These risks are the one that you have planned out and executed effectively. But it is important to know that risks (whether calculated or not) sometimes don't succeed.

Fail forward. Therefore, failing should be a comfortable part of your vocabulary. But don't misinterpret failure. Don’t fear it. Don’t be embarrassed by it. Because failure is not fatal. It is like a big pothole that you didn’t see coming. Learn to fail forward and fail fast.

Fix faster. Once you have encountered a failure (and we all will), then it is time to fix it. Not dwell on it. Not lament on it. Instead, address it. Learn from it. Then, move on. Fixing should allow one to adjust and adapt quickly. And therefore improve in order to move one more step closer to your dreams.

Calculate risks. Fail fast. Fix faster.

Develop success from failures. Discouragement and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success. ~Dale Carnegie
