Slave to our Emotions
Most of what we do on this earth is based on feeling. We retaliate because we feel threatened. We shop because of how it makes us feel. You may have even heard yourself say at one time, “I’m doing it just because I feel like it.”
But a small ounce of wisdom will tell you that just doing something because of how it feels is usually not the recipe for success in life. In fact, how we feel historically has put humans in various and unnecessary predicaments.
Just think of these instances: Walking off your job because of how the manager made you feel. Not studying for that test because you feel like going to bed. Raising your voice (yelling) at your significant other because you had a frustrating day at work. Eating that 3rd donut because it tastes so good (feeling).
Sure, there are instances when it is important to listen to that gut feeling that you have about certain situations. I would like to suggest that we don't listen to that gut feeling enough. Instead, we look to use feelings as defense mechanisms against coworkers or loved ones.
As you embark on a new week, look to avoid becoming a slave to your feelings and emotions. Instead, look to control the feelings that you have. Of note, it will require a certain level of discipline, but (trust me) you will be amazed at the results.
I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self. ~Aristotle
