Passion Vs. Purpose
I’ve written much about purpose. And I have mentioned passion quite a bit, as well. But this morning, allow me to pen a controversial MMM which identifies my mixed feelings for one and love of the other. I would love to hear your take also.
The Britannica Dictionary defines passion as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something. It goes on to describe it as a strong feeling (such as anger) that causes one to act in a dangerous way.
Purpose, on the other hand, is defined by Britannica as the reason why something is done or used; the aim or intention of something. The aim or goal of a person - what a person is trying to do, become, etc.
I’ve written much about purpose. And I have mentioned passion quite a bit, as well. But this morning, allow me to pen a controversial MMM which identifies my mixed feelings for one and love of the other. I would love to hear your take also.
Oftentimes, people will tell us to follow and do what we are passionate about. From my half-a-century on this planet, the following of one’s passion may be a good place to start, but often winds up short-lived. You see, as described in the definition above, this intense feeling can wane. It can fall off a bit.
But your purpose. Your purpose is that conviction. That meaning. That why. This is what will remain long after the roadblocks, hurdles, and obstacles have been overcome. This is the reason that I believe in purpose and doubt passion. I do believe that passion can get you started, but we must become extremely self-aware about what is needed shortly thereafter. In other words, this feeling should be replaced soon with your reason - your why. If not, then you may have to begin again.
If no one has ever had a chat with you about the purpose of your life, its never too late to begin this journey. And if you don’t believe that you have someone who can go this deep with you, it might be time to have that powerful conversation.
